Widespread snow will continue to plague the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles tonight as a potent upper level system moves across New Mexico. Through 3 am...the heaviest snow will exist over the southeast half of the Texas Panhandle where at mesoscale snow band extends from near Silverton...to McLean...to near Canadian. Snowfall rates of around 2 inches per hour can be expected within this band...with lighter amounts anticipated elsewhere. A few rumbles of thunder may accompany this snow band as it moves to the east at 30 mph. In addition...strong north winds of 20 to 30 mph...with gusts exceeding 40 mph at times...will result in blowing and drifting snow. Visibilities will be reduced to near zero occasionally...with temporary whiteout conditions. Travel is strongly discouraged across the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles due to these hazardous conditions. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 PM tonight.

... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this
evening...
A Winter Storm Warning for snow and blowing snow remains in effect
until 7 PM CDT this evening for all of the Texas and Oklahoma
panhandles.
* Timing: moderate to heavy snow and blowing snow will continue to
impact the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles tonight before coming to
an end by Saturday afternoon.
* Main impact: snow amounts will range from 2 to 4 inches in the
western panhandles to 4 to 6 inches in the eastern counties. In
addition to the heavy snow... north winds of 20 to 30 mph... with
gusts exceeding 40 mph at times... will result in near blizzard
conditions across much of the area. This will result in extremely
hazardous travel and temporary whiteout conditions.
* Other impacts: wind chill values will remain in the single digits
through the morning hours. Snow drifts in excess of 2 feet will be
possible with this storm.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
If travel is necessary... motorists should be prepared for severe
winter weather conditions. Dress warmly and make sure your car is
in good running condition. Be sure that your car is winterized and
that brakes... lights... battery... exhaust... heater connections...
defroster... and windshield wipers are in good working order.
A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
